A colleague of mine recently asked me to be his friend on Facebook. Although I was hesitant at first to take him up on the offer, I decided it might be a good opportunity to explore Facebook and meet other librarians. When my 14-year old daughter discovered I had a Facebook page, she nearly burst with surprise, then envy, that I had one and she didn’t.
She began intensely lobbying me for one, but I told her she didn’t need it. She said her best friend at school had a Facebook page, so we looked her up. I asked her ifI could ‘poke’ her friend, although it nearly caused my daughter to die of embarrassment. She okay’d it, then we explored Facebook some more. When we discovered more of her classmates on Facebook, I asked if I could poke them too, but the thought of it was just too horrific for her.
Today the friend we poked invited me to be her friend, so I took her up on the offer. I checked out her profile, which revealed my daughter’s page. Hmmm… I thought she didn’t have one. So I poked her and sent her a short message. I can’t wait for her reply…
She’d probably freak out to know I have not one, but two blogs. I’m sure she thinks I’m a fuddy duddy old libarian who doesn’t participate in the Internet the way cool young people do. I’ll tell her about the blogs some time in the future… when we’re both a little older…
