My children’s school corporation lost their grades over spring break and the software that lets parents view grades online isn’t working. This is a boon to my son, who knows I can’t look at his grades until they fix this portion of the software. He’s jumping with joy and praying they don’t get it fixed.
My [...]

My daughter has her state gymnastics meet in Madison, Indiana, on Saturday. About a month ago, I made reservations at the Clifty Inn, in the Clifty Falls State Park in Madison. We stayed there last fall after she had a meet and I really liked the hotel, it’s panoramic view, and the surrounding forest. After [...]
Spring storms = Sleepless night

Last night was awful. I didn’t get to bed until 12 am and as I was settling down to sleep, a thunderstorm rolled in. At first I thought it would be relaxing to fall asleep to the gentle rumble of thunder. But within minutes, there was a bright flash of lightning and a booming crash of thunder. [...]

I heard an interesting story on NPR this morning about kids cursing: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=89127830. It made me think of the first time I heard the most potent curse word of them all.
I was in grade school and my younger brother came home with a new curse word. I’d never heard it before and it didn’t sound like a [...]

My daughter’s gymnastics team has been torn apart by teenage girl drama this season. A new girl who joined the team last fall has put all of her energy not into gymnastics, but into making everyone on the team fight. She’s pulled stunts like putting coats into the toilet and has stolen money from her [...]

Yesterday was my son’s first baseball practice of the season (if you don’t count the one they cancelled last week because of the monsoon). It was so cold (temps in the low 40s) I sat in the car to watch. Eric was warmly dressed in his Under Armor, T-shirt, and sweatshirt, so I wasn’t worried about [...]

Happy Easter!
We got up super early this morning to attend the 7 am Easter sunrise service at our church. While waiting for the service to begin, the kids noticed in the bulletin there was a 9 am Easter service. Oops! They were quite mad at me for making them get up so early. Fuss, fuss. Oh [...]

My daughter and I went to the Hillary Clinton rally at Harrison High School tonight. We waited in line for 2 hours and 15 minutes before we got in. It was just in time, too. It was getting pretty cold outside. Inside the gym, it had to be 80+ degrees, so we warmed up quickly, then [...]
Too much rain!

When my son asked me earlier in the evening if school would be cancelled because of the rain, I said, “No way– that’s wishful thinking.” But his wish came true.
It rained all day and into the night, with more expected overnight and into the morning. The weathermen said we could have 5-7 inches of rain before [...]
Teen slang

One of things that either makes or breaks your ‘coolness’ as a parent of a teen is whether or not they allow you to use their slang terms. My 15 year old daughter’s latest term is ‘dog’ as in ‘Dog, how ‘ya doin’?’ I suppose ‘dog’ is slang for friend or buddy, so I absorb [...]
