Tonight my husband and I will have to split up and each take a child to an event. Laura has her cheer banquet and Eric has his cub baseball dinner/fundraiser. The funny thing is, we’ll be at the same facility, but in different rooms. How weird is that? Maybe we can carpool!
It may one of [...]

A future in gymnastics

My daughter’s recent switch to a new gym was fraught with uncertainties for both of us. She was reluctant to leave her friends and a coach she’d known for 9 years. I was also struggling with questions of whether or not the move was for the right reasons or if I was just following the [...]

My daughter and I have been watching the Olympic gymnastics competition for the last week and a half and we’ve been both thrilled and frustrated with the results. It was the first time we really sat down together and watched Olympic gymnastics, even though my daughter has been a competitive gymnast for ten of her fifteen-and-a-half [...]
Time for a change

It’s time for a change in gymnastics programs for my teenage daughter, a level 9 gymnast who has been in the sport for ten years. Although she is somewhat reluctant to leave the coach she has been with for nine of those years, my husband and I feel this is the right thing to do [...]
Missing in action?

I know I haven’t written in a long time… I’ve been busy with all-star baseball (which is over now!) and working too much. Last week was a killer! I got up early and worked, then went to work, then stayed late at work, then brought work home and continued work until late each night (like [...]
Relaxing weekend

I had a nice, relaxing weekend after a busy week in Anaheim, California, for the ALA Annual Conference. I was wiped out after flying back overnight Tuesday, zipping through 4 timezones in fifteen hours and arriving in my hometown Wednesday morning– without any sleep. I was so sleepy I was dizzy. I thought connected chairs without [...]

I hope I can make it one more day to the weekend. This week was busier than I imagined it would be. Being sleep deprived hasn’t helped any, either. It makes it harder to cope with stressful stuff, like when my son’s middle school called me on Monday asking if I could help them track down the [...]
Another missed home run

I was out of town again tonight and my son had another home run. There must be some magical combination of my absence and his ability to really hit the ball hard (although he told me this one hit the fence and bounced off– he just got lucky). Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to win the game. [...]

While I was out of town last week, I got an urgent phone call from my son. I was in a restaurant waiting for our meal to come when I got the call. He doesn’t usually call me when I’m out of town and rarely has much to say if I try to talk to [...]
Frostbitten feet

We sat through another frigid baseball game tonight. The wind, the cold– they haven’t gone away. I tried to dress warm enough to survive the game without cooking myself at work by wearing too many layers. I dug out my full-length wool dress coat from the back of the closet and wrapped my extra warm black [...]
